Recover data from hard drive through the facility as s secondary hard disk on another computer?

I have a [Windows Vista] laptop that can not boot properly more. I like to retrieve the data from the portable hard drive. My current plan is to have to [SATA] hard drive and connect it to my [Win XP] desktop computer to transfer files from laptop hard drive of the computer. I have a IDE-SATA adapter so that there is a problem. The problem is that my drive not being recognized by the desktop computer. As I am a novice when it comes down to hardware, what am I doing wrong? Could someone send the instructions? That this process even more work? Or someone may offer me alternatives, but low-cost * data recovery methods, or perhaps easier ways? Thank you.

Open computer management and check whether it is in the list on disk. If you may need establish a drive letter to see the drive. Another possibility is that power is connected to both the SATA disk drive and adapter. You can hear the disk to start the PC and you should be able to hear the drive spinning.
